Solar Cookers

While we were shooting the Permaculture Soils video with Geoff Lawton, we noticed an array of shiny solar cookers being assembled on the jetty at Zaytuna Farm. Barb Ford from Brisbane was cooking the afternoon lunch for the woofers and students on the farm. Taking a break from our filming, we asked Barb to give us a run down on the various cookers she had on display and explain their uses. Not all Solar Cookers are the same. Some act as ovens whilst others act as direct burners. I always had the idea that it took forever to cook a meal under...

Make Your Own Biogas!

If you thought making your own biogas for cooking was rocket science stuff and you needed a laboratory of technical wizardry to do it yourself then this guide will show you how easy it is to make your own Biogas plant. A family of four can be quite self sufficient when it comes to cooking an evening meal provided however you have access to a couple of dairy cows to supply the fuel. This is really a part two story about Nomad of Bali. When we interviewed him for a story on his organic garden he started telling us about his other big plan, a...

Aquaponics Secrets Trailer

Following on from the success of Murray Hallam’s first DVD “Aquaponics Made Easy” comes a new DVD called “Aquaponics Secrets” that is designed to fill in a lot more gaps in your Aquaponics knowledge. So what is so secret about this DVD and what hidden knowledge may it contain? We caught up with the producer of the DVD from Ecofilms, Frank Gapinski who says it’s all about building on the knowledge gained from the previous DVD made with Murray Hallam. Two Aquaponics DVDs to be Released

Aquaponics Secrets Coming Soon Murray Hallam’s new DVD Aquaponics Secrets will be release later in March this year. We’ve tried to keep it to a manageable length and give people a generous dollop of Marray’s fast paced no nonsense brand of Aquaponics knowledge. We were looking at a 90 minute DVD but it as swelled to about 145 minutes of quality information. We have made every effort to never repeat in this DVD any information that was already covered in the Aquaponics Made Easy DVD. So if you know the basics of how to setup...

Editing Aquaponics Secrets

We’ve had a number of people asking what happened to the release of the Aquaponics Secrets DVD? Over the last 12 months we have been filming an Aquaponics kit system from start to finish. We wanted to show the tiny fingerlings grow to maturity over the course of a year. The fish are still growing. We’re still filming them, but they are not quite plate size and not really ready for harvest at the moment. In fact we’ve grown quite fond of them and don’t want to see them end up on the barbecue plate! We were tempted to...

Compost Wheelie Bin Hot Water

Here’s a great tip given by a member of the Aquaponics Made Easy Forum on cheap easy to build hot water system using compost. The original question posted to the forum was how to heat a fish tank over winter without any extra energy costs. A hard thing to do. Thermal Mass heating was one answer but a crafty member posted a very interesting solution and swears that it works a treat. We’ve illustrated his simple design. So simple you will think “Aha! Why didn’t I think of that?” Daryl from Windsor in NSW came up...

The Nomad Way in Bali

“Everybody talks about organic farming, but nobody would do anything about it.” says Nomad. The politicians wont do anything. Neither would the farmers. Nomad decided to lead by example. He would try it himself.

Solar Panel Energy Calculators

Solar Panel Energy Calculators

We recently installed a 1  KW solar panel array above our office here at Ecofilms. I must admit we didn’t give it too much thought until the installers arrived with the solar panels. Feeding back to the grid is one thing but having a inverter box bolted to the wall of the office with it’s red blinking lights constantly flashing makes you take a closer look and watch how much actual Kilowatt energy is really being captured by these six panels? This got us thinking about about our location and if there is some sort of chart or...

Aquaponics For Profit

Aquaponics For Profit

A lot of conventional Hydroponics growers are taking a careful look at converting their systems to Commercial Aquaponics not only because of the inherent benefit of growing fish and vegetables together but also the fact that water – a precious commodity in Australia is at a premium and reusing water and only topping up as needed is a big plus to minimising water loss and maximising profits.
