Hi Jemima - I would say commercial Fish Pellets especially formulated for trout. People do try and substitute other feeds but a feed high in protein is still necessary for healthy growth of your fish.

Hi Kristy, enamel bathtubs are fine. Plastic bathtubs are okay. Copper in no good. Look for second hand one piece bathtubs with no damage to their structure. Water quality and lots of oxygen in the water should be your main concern with growing trout. We are moving into cooler months ahead here in Australia so start building your systems. Same principles apply whatever variety of fish.

Awesome post. Have been looking for any info on growing veg in bath tubs. My question was about what bath tubs can't be (or shouldn't be) used. If you have any info to share on enamel/acrylic (?) or whatever types of bath tubs are out there that are OK to use with food growing, that would be much appreciated.

Awesome set up. Thanks for sharing!

It's a good idea to line your metal bathtubs with pond liner. The reason for this is two fold:
A) If there's nicks or scratches in the enamel, you can get Nickel leeching into the water and killing your fish. How do I know this? It happened to me:

B) Metal bathtubs act like massive heatsinks, not so bad if you live on the coast, but if you live inland e.g. Canberra you have 20 degree temperature fluctuations during a day, and you don't want to have the water temps fluctuating like that.
